Police chiefs across the nation are torn between a desire to assist the investigation of the Sept. 11 attacks by following Attorney General John Ashcroft's request that they help interview thousands of Middle Eastern men and a concern that the plan seems like racial profiling.
Mr. Ashcroft announced the plan to find and interview 5,000 men, most of whom hail from Middle Eastern countries, in a Nov. 9 memorandum
The interest by local law enforcement agencies in maintaining good relations with community residents has created a natural tension with the directive.
In Portland, the acting police chief, Andrew Kirkland, said he would not participate because questioning immigrants simply because they were immigrants violated Oregon law.

Fisk: If the Americans really want to make the Middle East explode, that's all they have to do. I mean, how much further can you go before you turn a whole people against you? How much more provocative do you have to be?
You know, when you see what is happening out here, and you see it in the perspective of how many dead over how many years, the surprise to me is that we didn't see planes flying into buildings long ago. How come it took so long? This is not an excuse for these wicked crimes against humanity, but I'm very surprised this didn't happen earlier. And if we go into Iraq as well, then stand by for more bin Ladens.

The U.S. is not used to attacks on its soil," said Claude Monnier, the former editor of The Geneva Journal. "But 5,000 people — if you compare this to the world wars, or to Rwanda, there is a kind of imbalance. People are beginning to be angry here. They were moved by Sept. 11, but feel that the U.S. is being overbearing. Normally, the Swiss are pro-American, but in Afghanistan, we see a small and powerless country being trashed out by the U.S. As a small country, we have some sympathy."

Yesterday, I had a chance to talk with Harry Friedl via phone. Although most of the information that I reported yesterday was essentially true there are a few facts that need correction and some facts that were not mentioned. As stated before, Harry had the tractor on the edge of the Liquid Manure pit for the purpose of agitating the materials in the pit. Helps the materials, straw and manure to decompose faster into a slurry which is then pumped into spreaders and sprayed on or dug into the crop growing fields. Anyway, the agitator had been working at this particular spot for some time and it was about time to change it. So Harry, climbed aboard the tractor and was about to move it to another location when he heard a clucking noise and the tractor started to slide backwards into the manure pit. "There was not much I could do as the bank was damp and I was on slippery grass and the weight of the agitator just pulled it back into the pit. Harry, said. It seems that the exhaust pipe and air intake just remained high enough above the watery slurry to let the engine keep on running. Harry said that although he was pretty well covered with the slurry up to nearly his arm pits that after the first initial shock of the cold slurry, It was not that bad as he waited about 20 to 30 minutes trying to signal people on the highway.
Finally a woman driver saw him waving his arms and drove in. She had a cell phone and after a brief conversation with Harry, called the 911 number and it was not long before help, both ambulance and fire department was on the way. In the meantime, another driver stopped by and he along with the first driver, were able to get a gate from one of the fences and get it over to the tractor so Harry could get off and over to the bank.
About that time the Kendall Ambulance Service and two fire Dept. trucks arrived. Seeing that there was no need for the Ambulance, it returned to Kendall. The Fire Dept. Personal stayed on however to help Harry and to get the tractor out. "I really did not see much of what was going on," Harry said, "As they had sent me to the house to clean up." But I understand that one of the Divers did go down and hook a chain on the tractor and the big four wheel drive was able to pull it out".
In talking about the fact that he was not chilled from that nearly half hour in the cold liquid we surmised that the fact that the tractor was still running produced some of the warmth from the motor of the tractor helped to warm the slurry around the tractor and explained somewhat of why it was more bearable then it might have otherwise been. Also the weather that day had also been up in the high fifties and low sixties.
"I am glad I decided not to try and jump off as the tractor was sliding back. for I probably would not have cleared the front wheels and I would not be here talking to you." Harry said. Yes, he was bit worried about getting out after he was in there. "I can't swim in ordinary water and certainly would not be able to swim in that slurry".
Harry, is thankful to all those that helped in preventing this accident from being a tragedy. "I must be like a cat with 9 lives," Harry said. "So what number is this one I asked," "About 6th or 7th," Harry replied. "Yes, I am feeling okay, don't seem to have any ill effects but sure am glad it doesn't happen everyday" Story as reported by, Bill Weber - WEB Host.

Subject: LOCATION OF SCENIC SHOT.
It is along South Dakota State Highway 73 approximately 10 miles south of Kadoka, SD. It is taken on the south side looking north toward the Badland wall which stretches so many miles through the area. This is NOT within the Badlands National Park; it is on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in an area that I consider at least as scenic as the park. This area lies south of the White River and is known as Pass Creek Basin.
