THE MIRACLES OF CREATION

Less than six months ago, spring came to our area, the cold and frozen ground gave way to the heat of the sun and the warm southern breezes. The landscape which had been covered with white snow and glittering ice was transformed into a completely new environment. with flowers, green grass and trees bringing forth their leaves.

Joy abounded in the land, as all life prepared for rebirth. The air was filled with the songs of the returning song birds. Wild geese winged their way to their northern breeding grounds to raise their families. Farmers and gardeners, tilled and planted the warming soil.

Within six weeks, fall will return to this area, That one tiny seed planted last March or April has taken the warm soil, rain and sunlight and produced 50 to 100 like seeds or that potatoes eye has produced 6-8 like potatoes, that one tomato plant 30 or more tomato and so it goes. All this transformation taking place in about a 150 day period of the 365 days of the year. That in itself is a miracle, but even more miraculous is the fact that these reproductions carry with them the gene to reproduce a like product for millenniums to come. With the exception, (of some hybrids) which revert back to even a lesser product than the original.

But even more miraculous than the reproduction of seeds, vegetables etc. is the reproduction in the animal and human kingdom. For thousands and thousands of years humans and animals have inhabited this planet. Reproducing our kind, without great physical change. A zebra has been a zebra, a cow a cow, a wolf a wolf in looks since records have been keep by mankind. Mankind however, is perhaps the greatest of all miracles. Physically perhaps not as well endowed as many of the animals. No furry coat to keep him warm during the cold, nor the speed to outrun danger or the cunning to hide from danger. But mankind has the ability to invent and produce the clothing needed to keep warm, the cars to out run danger, but which have also become a danger. Perhaps the greatest ability is to be able to communicate by the spoken and written word, his/her ideas, dreams and of things to come.

But the downside of mankind's miraculous mental powers is also its ability to create and devise methods of torture and destruction of his species by the invention of weapons of mass destruction that have the potential of annihilating large portions of his/her fellow beings

As I write this in the early morning hours, the sound of a mother deer talking to its faun is heard outside, a raccoon family stops by and cleans up what a pet cat had failed to eat last nite, soon the songs of the birds will fill the air, the sun will rise, six or more humming birds will return to partake of the sugary syrup, to which they have become addicted, forsaking the natural nectar of the flowers for this artificial handout. Primarily so we can behold their loveliness and beauty.

This raises an ethical question which had not entered my mind until I wrote the line above. Do we have the right to enslave our own or other species for our gain or pleasure?

Which brings us back to the THE MIRACLE OF CREATION. The miracle of our minds to challenge itself as to what is right and wrong and to act on it accordingly.
