Drug Dogs

WHAT MESSAGE DOES DOG/DRUG SEARCH SEND OUR CHILDREN

How many of us would tolerate a blanket search of our premises by Monroe County search dogs if it were found that there were illegal drugs in a few homes in our township or county.

Yet that is what we are saying to our students at the N.O.W. School District when we bring in County search dogs to sniff out supposedly illegal drugs by a few students.

To the best of my knowledge, every town, village and city in Monoe County have places that dispense a legal drug (alcohol) which has caused more damage and cost to the people and taxpayers in this county than all the illegal drugs found to date in any school in Monroe County.

I think that we can no longer say to our school age children and students,
DO AS WE SAY BUT NOT AS WE DO.

If we are going to talk to them about the dangers to ones health and welfare in the use of lllegal drugs let us also include in the discussion the dangers of legal drugs and try to explain to them why we need search dogs to invade their privacy.

NEARLY 40% OF ALL FATAL AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENTS IS ALCOHOL RELATED A LEGAL DRUG http://www.madd.org/stats/99_fatalities_by_state.shtml

So before we send Search Dogs up and down the hallways of Brookwood High School let us consider other alternatives to why we have a drug problem in the school in the first place and work with the students.
SEARCH DOGS MAKES EVERY STUDENT A SUSPECT.

Hi Bill

I read the article on the dogs at Brookwood and I do agree it sends a "message" of distrust to all kids. That is my opinion, I will not get into a convoluted discussion about it but did want to cheer you up!
