CHAPTER 1, OUR VACATION TO MADELINE ISLAND September 14-19th 2001

It was 9:00 clock Friday morning Sept. 14th when Thema and I finally got on our way to our vacation spot in northern Wisconsin and the Apostle Islands. The weather was partly cloudy, a bit cool but nice for traveling. We drove to Tomah, took I-94 from there until we reached Osseo where we turned off and went over to Augusta, took highway 27 and headed north to Hayward. Going via Hobechan in order to visit our Son-in-laws parents, the Del Lynches. We arrived at the Lynches a few minutes after noon. Mrs. Lynch had the noon meal pretty well prepared. I went out to the garden where Del was cutting weeds and told him we had arrived. We sat down to a delicious meal prepared by Mrs. Lynch, after the meal, their son, Gene, Wife Heidi and two children stopped by for a visit on their way to another appointment.

We left the Lynches after about 2:00pm and headed out on D over to 40 and then on to Hayward. At Hayward we took US Highway 63 to the junction of US Highways 2 & 13, went a few miles and then turned north on Highway 13 thru Wasburn and on to Bayfield. Just short of entering Bayfield we arrived out our reserved Motel, which was called, DREAM CATCHERS, the room was small but it had a beautiful, Native American painting on the south wall

The motel itself isowned by Native Americans. Thema said, after coming back from paying the bill, that they told her that the motel had been sold to the, Sea Gull, which is located a couple of blocks from there, it is to become effective next season.

It had been a long day so after a warm meal in one of the restaurants down town we turned in early. The nite was fairly cool and the heater in our room did not work so we did not sleep as well as we would have liked.

Saturday morning, Thema had thought possibly of taking the Apostle Island Boat tour but felt that at this time of year there was no reason to make reservations as the tourist season was over. Well that was not the case and so we did not take the tour On our way down to the Northland Museum and Visitors Center, we stopped at a rummage sale being held at Bill Webers Apple Stand (no relation}where we picked up so fairly nice bargains. Arriving at the Museum we were greeted by a large flock of Sea Gulls

but we did go down and visit the three story, three year old brand new building. With a spectacular array of artifacts of by gone days, lots of good photographs and artistic displays. Certainly a place we found most enjoyable for nearly four hours.

At six thirty that evening we went to the 6th Annual Apostle Island Light House Celebration where we had a delicious dinner followed by a interesting slide presentation of the work that the Light House Foundation, under the leadership of Tim Harrison, is doing in locating and getting community help in purchasing and restoring. I forgot the exact date but it is not too far away when the Federal and State Governments will be disposing of all their interest in light house. Mr. Harrison has written two books regarding these light houses. Mr. Harrison along with his assistant, Kathy Finnigan, publish the, Light House Digest, a monthly magazine as well as direct the activities of the Light House Foundation.

SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 16th. 2001

Since we decided to go to church over at Madeline Island we packed our bags early and left to catch the ferry which left Bayfield at 8:45. We were one of two cars on the ferry. Upon arriving at LaPointe on Madeline Island we drove over to the Madeline Island Motel which is run by a native from Kendall, Wi. Phil Dwyer and wife Jan. We did not expect to be able to get a room that early but thought that it might be ready but it was not but Phil did invite us in to have a bite of his Continental Breakfast.

We visited a bit and then on to the St. Johns United Church of Christ which is located just a bit south of the main part of the village.

The regular pastor Marna Lacheski was on vacation so Pastor David Satre was the Pastor of the services. Tremendous service, he quoted scripture from the Christian Bible and the Islamic Koran, showing how close the relationship was between the two documents. Prayers were given for our nation, all those who were injured, to all those that lost loved ones in the terrible tragedy of September 11th. Pastor Satre, went on to say that, the admontisment of the Bible of refraining from: An Eye for and Eye and a Tooth for a Tooth was even more valid in today situation and that we should all keep cool heads and clear minds in order to work out a long lasting solution to this very difficult situation. It was indeed a stirring and thought provoking sermon. Thanks Pastor Satre for a job well done.

TOMORROW THE 7 GENERATION 2,200 MILE MIGRATORY JOURNEY

CHAPTER 2 OUR VACATION TO MADELINE ISLAND September 14-19th 2001

Shortly after our 50th Wedding Anniversary celebration, we began thinking and planning for a vacation trip to our favorite vacation spot. Madeline Island, the largest of the Apostle Isand, located in Lake Superior. Prior to going over to Madeline Island we usually spend a couple of days in and around Bayfield. As we were looking over the available Motels that we had not stayed at we were drawn to try out a new one for this year. The Dream Catchers Motel, located just west of the Sea Gull motel where we have stayed many times. At the time we made our reservations, we did not know but thought it a possiblility that it was owned and operated by Native Americans of that area. But this was but the beginning of a number of interesting and exciting coincindences of our trip.

We went over to Madeline Island on Sunday morning September 16th and attended church there. At that time there was a young Native American lady handing out poster regarding the return of the 2,200 mile SEVEN GENERATION MIGRATION JOURNEY people and their planned prgram at their monument in the village park at about 3:00 oclock on Monday afternoon. The majority of the members of the travelers were members of the ANISHINABE NATION known today as Ojibways. There objective in thes 2,200 mile walk was to alert the people along the way of the dangers of the polutions of the waterways of the Great Lakes. For a better understanding of their objectives

JOURNEY OF 2,200 MILES

Well on this Monday we decided that if we were going to participate in the events of the Native American Cermonies, we had better go out to one of our favorite places on Madeline Island, BIG BAY, this is a two mile or more lovely sandy beach, so we buzzed out there and spent about 4 hours out there. A little after two oclock we decided if we were going to be at the dock to greet the MIGRATORY PEOPLE we had better be getting back to Village of LaPointe where they were going to come via Ferry boat and Voyager Conoes.

WE arrived back at LaPointe, about 2:25pm and to our suprise, as we entered the village there was one of the Voyager Canoes unloading.

Since it was suggested that all who attended the program bring along something for the Potluck, dinner so we stopped by the store and bought some cookies and then joined the walk with the Migatory Travels down to their Monument located in part of the Village Park

Prior to the WELCOME FEAST, there was a short program, where the Spirtual Leader of the Group, Chief Tom Mattinas, welcomed all those attending and then told a bit about the two months journey.
